The Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport is planning a major expansion and renovation of its terminal which will increase the passenger boarding gates by 58%(from 12 to 19). The planned renovations and new construction includes the demolition of the old, original concourse A and the construction of a new international concourse (A) to accommodate the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Offices and international flights into Birmingham. Airport security checkpoints will be consolidated , expanded and enhanced, along with the addition of concessions and rental car services. The New covered walkways and elevators will be added to improve passenger movement between the parking deck and the terminal. New baggage claim areas and systems will be installed to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of baggage movement to outbound aircraft. Local art and cultural exhibits will be displayed to make provide passengers with a more unique Birmingham experience.
Construction is scheduled to begin early 2011 and be completed by the mid-year, 2014.
